The nose and mouth providenatural warmth, moisture and filtration for the air we breathe. Having atracheostomy tube, however, by-passes these mechanisms so humidificationmust be provided to keep secretions thin and to avoid mucus plugs. Inorder to keep the environment at an optimal humidity level, Heat MoistureExchangers are used.
