A flowmeter is a gauge used to control the amount of oxygen and nitrous oxide mixture that is administered to a patient in dentistry. flowmeters are used in nitrous oxide systems to optimize the safety and efficacy of nitrous oxide dosage. They serve to limit the concentration of nitrous oxide to a maximum of 70% and oxygen to a minimum of 30%, thus avoiding toxicity and adverse effects of nitrous oxide. Flowmeters can be mounted on a mobile stand with a tank yoke, flush-mounted into cabinetry or onto mounting arms on a fully plumbed full office nitrous oxide system. Flowmeter must be calibrated, each state will require certification and inspection of systems. Nitrous flowmeter systems require a manifold alarm for compliance and safety.
Major manufacturers of flowmeters include Belmed.
