3. Establish Doctor and Assistant Working Positions

5. Select the Delivery Configuration
The delivery system affects where instruments are positioned and how tubing moves through the working area. Common configurations include rear, side, over-the-patient and chair-mounted approaches, with different options for doctor and assistant instrumentation.
Ask the clinical team what it prefers and why. A familiar delivery method may support efficient work, while a different configuration may solve a specific room constraint. Confirm handpiece positions, control locations, tray space, water needs and assistant-side suction.
The chair and delivery system should be selected together whenever possible. Compatibility, mounting and utilities are easier to resolve as one package than as separate purchases.
6. Plan the Operatory Light and Monitor
Confirm whether the light will be ceiling-, wall-, cabinet- or chair-mounted. Each choice affects structure, electrical preparation and movement.

8. Connect the Operatory to Sterilization Flow
An operatory does not operate alone. Instruments and materials move into the room, through treatment and back to the sterilization area.
Plan where clean instruments enter, where used instruments are contained and how they return for processing. The route should support the practice's infection-control policies and avoid unnecessary backtracking.
Instrument capacity also matters. The room schedule, cassette system and number of operatories affect the demand placed on dental sterilization equipment. A beautiful treatment room will still create bottlenecks if instrument processing cannot keep pace.
9. Confirm Utilities and Site Preparation
Equipment may require combinations of electrical power, air, vacuum, water, drainage, data, blocking or structural support. Requirements vary by product and configuration, so use the specifications for the exact equipment being installed.
Assign responsibility for confirming each requirement. The equipment provider, designer, contractor, electrician, plumber and technology company may all contribute, but the final plan should identify who is doing what and by when.
Do not close walls, pour final flooring or finish cabinetry before critical dimensions and utility locations have been checked against the selected equipment.
10. Plan Technology and Digital Workflow
Decide how images, scans and patient information will be captured and viewed in the operatory. Confirm computer requirements, network connectivity, monitor placement, available ports, cable paths and the software used by the practice.
If an intraoral scanner will move between rooms, identify where it will be stored, charged and used without blocking circulation. If the operatory needs access to CBCT or panoramic images, make sure the viewing setup supports that task.

11. Coordinate Delivery and Installation
Build the schedule backward from the date the room needs to be operational. Account for site preparation, equipment lead time, freight, delivery access, installation, technology setup, inspection requirements when applicable and staff orientation.
Confirm what installation includes and which tasks belong to other trades. Protect finished floors and doorways during delivery. Make sure someone with decision-making authority is available if the installation team discovers a site condition that requires a choice.

Before the room is complete, ask how major components will be reached for maintenance and repair. Avoid placing permanent construction where it prevents practical access to equipment connections.
Keep a record of model and serial numbers, utility drawings, manuals, installation information and warranty documents. For multi-room or multi-location practices, use consistent naming so the team can identify the correct unit when requesting support.
Also consider what happens during a future replacement. Can the chair or imaging component be removed without damaging cabinetry? Is there space for a future monitor or scanner? Thoughtful access can make later changes easier.
