Ultrasound is an imaging method that uses sound waves similar to sonar technology to examine the body’s structures. Ideal for assessing soft tissue, this imaging procedure is used for both diagnostic and treatment purposes.
How Does Ultrasound Work?
Ultrasound imaging is typically done outside of the body with a hand-held, wand-like transducer. The technician first applies a water-based gel to reduce the presence of air pockets and improve both contact and image quality. As the procedure begins, the technician moves the transducer where the gel has been applied. As this occurs, the transducer emits high-frequency sound waves that reverse their course once encountering an object. This pathway provides insight into the object’s shape, size and consistency. These results are displayed in real time on a monitor or looped in video form.
Ultrasound is ideal in both medical and dental contexts to examine organs, tissues and blood vessels, including for operation and to detect growths. Ultrasound technology may be used to evaluate a growing fetus, examine the thyroid or gallbladder, assess joint issues, check for breast lumps and other tumors or guide a biopsy needle.
