Matrix Buttons

Matrix buttons are most frequently used to make molds for provisional restorations that will be worn while final restorations are being fabricated. The buttons are hard and round. Hot water is used to soften matrix buttons. They can then be formed around the tooth or teeth being prepped making a mold that can be used to make a temporary crown or temporary bridge. The material becomes rigid again after it is cooled with air or cold water. Other uses for matrix buttons are bite registration, isolating and insulating teeth from temperature while working on nearby teeth, and border molding denture trays.

Advantage Dental Products is a company that makes matrix buttons.
